Two local women, Celinda Gerhardstein, of Republic, and Carol Carter, of Clyde, are raising money so they can take part in the 3-Day Walk For a Cure for breast cancer this October in Washington D.C.
The Walk For a Cure program raises funds for breast cancer research. Breast Cancer affects one in every eight woman.
“I was 16 years old when I lost my mom to breast cancer,” Carter shared. “I had my own scare with it in 2011, and this has pushed me to take part in this walk.”
Carter has been walking 6 miles and swimming 25 laps a night at the Tiffin YMCA to prepare for the event.
The Walk For a Cure is a three-day walk covering 60 miles. “We will walk 20 miles a day,” according to Carter. “There are little tent cities with pink tents set up at each check point along the way,” she added.
“They have activities for us to do at night, like dancing, and have promised us hot showers each night,” she continued. “I am not sure how much dancing I’ll be doing after walking 20 miles, but I plan on keeping them to their hot shower promise.”
Carter, who loves to walk, was seeking a partner to keep her motivated and to walk with in D.C.
“I was talking about it at Whirlpool (Corporation) one day, and Celinda heard me, and said she would do it,” said Carter.
“I’m not sure I totally understood what I was getting into,” Gerhardstein admitted. “But I was excited to be a part of such an important event.”
Gerhardstein’s mother was also affected by the disease when they found pre-cancerous cells in her breasts. Her mother would later have a double mastectomy.
Both women need to raise $2,300 in order to participate in the walk. “We are trying our best to come up with ideas on how to raise the money,” Gerhardstein said.
“We are going to have a fund raiser in connection with Plaza Lanes in April,” Carter added.
