The Lady Fliers picked up wins 12 and 13 this past week as they defeated Fremont Ross 69–43 Jan. 11 and Margaretta 55–36 at home Jan. 12. The two wins took the Lady Fliers to 13–0 overall and to 9–0 in the Sandusky Bay Conference. That record landed them at number three in the state in the latest DII rankings. You can catch the team in action Jan. 21 at St. Marys Central Catholic at 1:00 p.m.
The Lady Fliers had three players in double figures as Amanda Cahill led all scorers with 21 points. Breanne Michaels added 17 points and Rachael Smetzler had 13. Abbi Hasselbach led Ross with 15.
The Lady Fliers jumped out to a huge 25–8 lead over Ross after one quarter. They then outscored Ross 16–10 in the second quarter to lead 41–18 at the half. The Lady Fliers then doubled up Ross 20–10 in the third quarter to lead 61–28. Ross did manage to outscore the Clyde bench in the four quarter 15–8.
Other Lady Flier scorers in the game were Kelsey Michaels with eight, Lexi Weber four, Tayler Arndt two, Tori Rohrbach two and Jill Miller two.
Margaretta gave the Lady Fliers all they could handle in the first half before crumbling under the pressure in the second half.
The Lady Fliers led 13–10 after one quarter thanks to five points from Lexi Weber and four from Amanda Cahill. In the second quarter Margaretta outscored the Lady Fliers 12–11 to trail by only two at the half 24–22. Again it was Cahill and Weber helping to hold off the Polar Bears as Cahill had five and Weber four.
In the third quarter the Lady Fliers outscored Margaretta 17–4 to blow the game open. Cahill had six points and Kelsey Michaels had four and three other girls scored at least two points to end the third quarter at 41–26. In the fourth quarter the Lady Fliers outscored Margaretta 14–10 to win going away. Cahill had seven in the quarter.
“I liked the second half of this game a lot better than the first half,” Lady Flier Coach John Cahill said. “We were sluggish in the first half but some of that was them defensively. In the second half we played more like us. We really played well defensively in the second half. We just played much better in the second half. We tried to not let our game Sunday affect us today. In a way this game was like a perfect storm. I have to give credit to them because they had a good game plan.
“Lexi Weber was just great tonight. Her improvement from last year to this year has just been tremendous. She was really good tonight both offensively and defensively for us tonight. Lexi was definitely a bright spot.”
Cahill and Weber led the Lady Fliers in scoring with Cahill getting 22 and Weber 13. Margaretta didn’t have a player score in double figures but Tatum Tucker had nine and Sarah Weyer had eight.
“The whole team came out tonight and knew that Margaretta was on a pretty good hot streak,” Weber said. “We knew that they were not going to come out and give up right away. We started a little shaky and were only up by two at the half but in the second half we stepped up big time. Every coach I’ve ever had has taught me that you have to lock down on defense first and then your offense will come and that’s what happened tonight, with the help of my teammates of course.”
The Lady Fliers out rebounded Margaretta 31–22 with Cahill getting 11 to complete her double/double. K. Michaels added seven more. Weyer led Margaretta with seven. The Lady Fliers were 9-of-13 from the line while Margaretta was 4-of-10. Rachael Smetzler had eight steals and Weber had five assists.
Other Lady Flier scorers in the game were K. Michaels with six, Smetzler with six, Hannah Wadsworth four, Breanne Michaels two and Katie Lynch two.
